Contributions of Integrative and Complementary Practices in pregnancy: a literature review

Integrative and Complementary Practices (IPCPs) are techniques aimed at restoring the body's balance and well-being. When applied to pregnant women, they become a therapy that aims to reduce the emotional, physical, and psychological effects generated by pregnancy. Thus, the objective of this research is to analyze the benefits of Integrative and Complementary Practices during pregnancy. This is an integrative, descriptive and qualitative review. The research used as search platforms the Virtual Health Library (VHL), PUBMED and Scielo. The time frame includes the years 2015 to 2020 and the keywords were combined in English and Portuguese. A flowchart was performed with the selection of articles and these were organized in a table. The authors reported that electroacupuncture can reduce pain or that the use of herbal medicines can help to reinforce breast milk. On the other hand, the concern was the reduction of low back pain that can be improved with auriculotherapy. In addition, the effect of these techniques has been shown to suffer anxiety and depression developed during pregnancy. It is emphasized that no significant adverse effects were reported. Finally, the PICS can act as an alternative therapy for pregnant women and that it is of utmost importance that these techniques be applied by health systems and that they be known by both health professionals and patients. In fact, there was na improvement in insomnia and mood among the women Who used the techniques.
