The clinical practice of nurses in the aesthetic rehabilitation of mastectomy patients

According to the National Cancer Institute, breast cancer is the second most common type of cancer among women in Brazil and in the world, after non-melanoma skin cancer. Mastectomy, even accompanied by immediate breast reconstruction, can be a traumatic experience for women and can be perceived as mutilation, significantly impacting their self-esteem and emotional stability. The nurse in the rehabilitation process has a prominent role during treatment, in the prevention and management of complications that can compromise functionality and affect the quality of life of women. The objective of this study was to identify the actions of nurses that restore self-esteem in patients undergoing mastectomy. The methodology used was a bibliographic review in the Google Scholar database, VHL and SciELO, published between 2016 and 2022, available in full. Initially, 157 studies were found and after applying the filters, according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 138 studies were eliminated. Duplicate studies, monographs, handouts and books were not considered. At the end, 18 scientific articles were included. The deconstruction of the female image by removing the breast emotionally and psychologically impacts women's lives, in this case the nurse must act as a facilitator of improving the quality of life of these women and the ability to accept. One of the main objectives of the nurse's work is to promote a better adaptation of the woman to the new scenario to which she finds herself. The family can be a great ally in the emotional support of mastectomized patients, and the nurse must provide the necessary educational and emotional support in these cases.
