Objective: To present the importance of assistance and encouragement of breastfeeding in Primary Health Care as a guarantee of adequate health status, within the field of public policies, and to identify the factors that trigger early weaning. Method: This is an Integrative Review that was used as a strategy for research and organization of articles carried out through scientific productions, cataloged from searches and surveys of studies indexed in the following data platforms: Latin American Literature and the Caribbean in Health Sciences (LILACS), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval Sistem online (Medline) and SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online), aggregating scientific studies and selecting specific articles. In this bibliographic survey carried out by the bases, the standardized descriptors were used: Public Health Policies; Breastfeeding; Primary Health Care. Results and Discussion: Based on the information obtained, it was confirmed that breastfeeding is an incipient phase in a woman's reproductive process and its practice provides mutual benefits for both the mother and the newborn. The related Public Breastfeeding Policies are an important tool in the process of assistance and improvement of the child's health, enabling the avoidance of early weaning that occurs mainly due to sociocultural conditions. Conclusion: The analysis of the information found allows us to understand that despite the existence of breastfeeding policies, it is essential that there are initiatives, operations and strategies that aim to promote, protect and support breastfeeding through educational actions from the prenatal period in joint action. family and support professionals.
