Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease associated with insufficient insulin in the body (type 1 DM) or a defect in the action of insulin produced (type 2 DM). Decompensated diabetes mellitus can lead to systemic complications, including oral manifestations such as: gingivitis, periodontitis, salivary gland dysfunction, xerostomia, susceptibility to oral infections, burning mouth syndrome, taste alterations, and halitosis. Objective: The aim of this study is to present the interrelation between diabetes mellitus and dental treatment and to propose a clinical protocol and the necessary care in the management of these patients. Methodology: It was developed through a bibliographic research and literature review, whose scientific articles were accessed in the Scielo, PUBMED, UpToDate, LILACs and Google Scholar databases and published in the last 11 years. Results and Conclusion: It is concluded that it is important that the Dental Surgeon (DC) understands DM, implements diagnostic measures and obtains information about the clinical condition of each patient, from the first consultation, in order to provide individualized care, with an approach that minimizes the risk of complications and improves the patient's quality of life.
