It is estimated that by 2025, more than 700 million people will be obese. Bariatric surgery is a quick way to treat patients with grade III obesity, seeking to limit gastric volume and thus limit the amount of food ingested in order to achieve a decrease in weight. Currently, four surgical methods are used for the treatment of obesity: Roux-en-Y gastroplasty, vertical gastrectomy, adjustable gastric banding, and duodenal switch. Regarding risks, complications are divided into early complications and late complications. Bariatric surgery is a safe and effective alternative for the treatment of obesity, but just like any other surgical procedure, there are prerequisites and risks. The present review aims to analyze the techniques and risks of bariatric surgery.
