Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the name given to abnormalities present in the structure or function of the heart or great vessels, and the diagnosis causes a great impact on parents, as a result of recurrent invasive treatments, surgery and a higher risk of death of the child. Preparing for surgery is a highly complex procedure and requires the patient to be in acceptable clinical conditions for its performance. Objective: To report the experience of counseling parents of children with CHD waiting for cardiac surgery, focusing on the influence of care for a good postoperative prognosis. Method: This is a descriptive study, with a qualitative approach in the form of experience reporting, carried out in the extension project: 'AMIGOS DO CORAÇÃO' in a university hospital. Results: It was noticed that the participants felt welcomed and emphasized the importance of the guidelines, they reported having more confidence to deal with the disease and the surgical procedure. Conclusion: It is evident that the activities in the project provided benefits for the hospital reception, knowledge about CC, proportional quality of life, and several other aspects in the lives of patients and their families.
