Cleft lip and palate are congenital anomalies resulting from a failure in the fusion of the labial and palatine processes during embryonic development. Lips play a crucial role in facial aesthetics, expressing feelings, beauty and attractiveness. For people who have undergone cleft lip repair surgery, having lips that are well designed and proportionate to the face is essential to convey not only beauty, but also emotional health. Although surgical repair of cleft lip is essential to correct the deformity and dysfunction, residual cosmetic imperfections such as scars and keloids can occur, which are common in these patients. The resulting asymmetry and low volume of the upper lip can be treated surgically or through less invasive approaches. The use of temporary soft tissue fillers, such as hyaluronic acid, has been shown to be an alternative to correct the labial asymmetry characteristic of these malformations and to improve the volume after surgical repair. Furthermore, in the treatment to reduce the appearance of scars, subincision and microneedling are proposed techniques, and the combination of the two has shown better results. Thus, the aim of this study is to carry out a literature review on the therapeutic approach to cleft lip and palate, focusing on surgical repair techniques and the use of temporary soft tissue filling to correct residual cosmetic imperfections, in addition to evaluating treatments proposed to reduce the appearance of scars, such as subincision and microneedling.
