General aspects of pediatric palliative care: An integrative literature review

Palliative Care emerges as a humanitarian philosophy of caring for terminally ill patients, alleviating their pain and suffering. This care foresees the action of an interdisciplinary team, where each professional, recognizing the limits of his performance, will contribute to the patient, in a terminal state, having dignity in his death. Specifically in the field of anesthesia, the expansion of palliative care is even more recent, verifying that the challenges for the anesthesiologist who assists the patient who requires palliative care have been increasing due to the increasing progress obtained with the new techniques of analgesia and sedation. Care in palliative anesthesia is intended to provide comfort, provide the other with his own care and give him the power to take responsibility for it. Among these new techniques, patient-controlled analgesia (PCA) stands out. In Pediatrics, palliative care is that which prevents, identifies and treats children suffering from a chronic, progressive and advanced disease, their families and the teams that care for them. They are appropriate at any stage of the disease and offer the greatest advantage when given early along with other therapies aimed at curing or controlling the underlying disease.
