The aim of the study is to identify the practice of hand hygiene and the bacterial growth of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) among healthcare professionals. This is an observational, cross-sectional study with health professionals from a public hospital, between 2019 and 2020, through non-participant observation of the hand hygiene technique and collection for microbiological analysis. Fisher's test, chi-square and Student's t test were used. 73 (100.0%) professionals participated, most of them from the nursing team. The overall mean score obtained for hand hygiene was 6.9 (SD=1.6; min=2, max=10; 95%CI: 6.5-7.2), denoting 57.5% of the technique. The scores showed a statistically significant difference for profession and workload (p<0.05). There was bacterial growth of MRSA in 19 (26.0%) samples, associated with time of experience and profession (p<0.05). No professional completed all the steps of the technique and bacterial growth was greater among professionals with longer experience and the nursing staff.
