Abstract

Introduction: Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) is the most common form of idiopathic scoliosis. Surgical treatment of AIS aims to slow the progression of curvature, preserve lung function and minimize degenerative changes in the spine. However, there are many variables that can impact the quality of life of patients with AIS after surgery. Objective: To review the main results related to quality of life after surgical treatment of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. Methods Systematic review of the literature. Inclusion criteria were: human research, clinical, prospective studies and studies related to quality of life after surgery as a treatment for AIS. The search descriptors were "Scoliosis", "Orthopedic Procedures", "Surgical Procedures, Operative", "Quality of Life". Results: Thirty-three articles were included, 75.75% of which were cohort studies. The main scale used to assess quality of life was the Scoliosis Research Society (72.72%). An improvement in the parameters of quality of life, self-image, satisfaction and functionality was evidenced when comparing the preoperative period with the postoperative period. The different surgical approaches do not seem to differ from each other in terms of such findings. Conclusion: There are few studies with a high level of scientific evidence related to the study of quality of life after surgical correction of AIS. Quality of life directly implies social function and psychological health, interfering with the better recovery and survival of patients with AIS.
