The challenge of understanding how behavioral and emotional changes in adolescence is a normally difficult task for students to learn various topics, especially about biological, psychological and social development. When you search and develop research on Emotional Problems and Behavior in Childhood and Adolescence, such as Achenbach (1991), which characterizes emotional and behavioral problems by symptomatic patterns, can be very helpful, and was divided by him as externalizing and internalizing problems. This research was aimed at the evaluation of the frequency of internal and external symptoms of adolescents from a southern Brazilian city with 56.292 thousand inhabitants. To verify, use the Youth Self Report (YSR), Achenbach's self-report instrument used in adolescents between 11 and 18 years old, which were answered by 309 adolescents, both sexes, from two public and one private schools. Besides, in order to evaluate their parents (65 were the respondents) the CBCL (Child Behavior Checklist) was used. As the main results we found a significant frequency of clinical symptoms of both internalizing problems (IP) and externalizing problems (EP), 38.8% and 16.6% respectively. Confronting the scores displayed in the application of YSR scales for adolescents and CBCL for parents using Anxiety or Depression (p < 0.001), IP (p < 0.01) and Total Problems (p = 0.01), the scores were higher in YSR, the appropriate essay for adolescent’s evaluation. When comparing differences between internal and external symptoms between females and males, the mean Anxiety/Depression scores (p < 0.001) and Somatic Complaints (p < 0.001), Social Problems (p = 0.01) and Attention Problems (p < 0.01) were higher in females. It is concluded that due to the prevalence of IP and EP among adolescents, preventive measures should be caused both in the identification of signs as in an attempt of an early diagnosis, aiming at guiding the adolescents, their parents, as well as their teachers.
