Objective: To evaluate the association between cognitive performance (attention and orientation, memory, verbal fluency, language and visuospatial skills), schooling and psychiatric illness in Brazilian elderly assisted in an outpatient service of SUS referral hospital. Methods: Quantitative, cross-sectional and descriptive study of convenience sampling, with elderly patients seen at an outpatient clinic of a reference SUS hospital. We included 39 elderlies, with ages ranging from 60 to 82 years, who underwent sociodemographic, economic and clinical assessment with Addenbrooke's Cognitive Examination - Revised Version (ACE-R). Results: The study showed no significant correlation between cognitive performance, education and psychiatric illness. However, there was a significant association between alcohol use and memory, language and gender of the elderly. Conclusions: Long-term use of alcohol by the elderly population may cause cognitive changes, especially in the memory domain. Similarly, changes in language may be characteristic during the aging process; however, it is important to observe such changes, since they may be indicative of pathological alterations.
