Infant deaths related to cardiac malformations in the Northeast of Brazil: an ecological study

Abstract

Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile about infant deaths caused by cardiac malformation in the state of Maranhão. Method: This is a retrospective, descriptive, quantitative approach and epidemiological study of infant deaths from cardiac malformations in the period 2016-2020. The data were collected through the National System of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN), available through the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS). Results and Discussion: The year 2017 showed the highest incidence of deaths, totaling 119 infant deaths, presenting the percentage of 21%. The male gender stood out with the highest predominance of deaths, achieving a percentage of 54.10% in relation to the total number of cases. Brown individuals had the highest incidence of infant deaths, obtaining 359 deaths, equivalent to 65.21% of cases. Regarding birth weight, most deaths in individuals who were born weighing between 3000g and 3999g, about 183 deaths (33.33%). Conclusion: The results acquired in this research reveal a high and worrisome incidence of this grievance in males, within the binarity, besides its high expression in people of mixed race.

Izane Luísa Xavier Carvalho Andrade, Centro Universitário UniFacid Wyden

Graduated in Nursing from the University Center Nove de Julho (2005). Specialist in Neonatology from the São Camilo University Center (2008). Specialist in Auditing by the University Center UniFTC (2016). She has a Professional Master's Degree in Development and Environment from the Maria Milza College / Federal University of Recôncavo da Bahia (2020). She is currently a Professor and Researcher in Nursing and Medicine at the University Center Unifacid Wyden (2022) teaching the curricular subjects: Community and Family Medicine I and II, Health Management for Medicine, Primary Care for Nursing, and also acts as a Preceptor in the same institution. In addition, she has experience in adult, pediatric, and neonatal ICU; Nursing Management and Quality Management. In addition, she is a professor in the Postgraduate Course of Obstetrics and Neonatology at the Unifacid Wyden University Center.

Lucas Manoel Oliveira Costa, Instituto de Ensino Superior Múltiplo

Undergraduate of the bachelor's degree in nursing at the Institute of Multiple Education - IESM (2018). Currently, he has a scholarship as an intern at the health operator of the Unimed Teresina System, developing with the multidisciplinary team actions in the area of telecare and telehealth. He has already worked as a researcher through the Institutional Program of Scholarships for Scientific Initiation (PIBIC) for two consecutive years, besides working as a monitor in the subjects Systematization of Nursing Care in Transmissible Diseases (SAE in DT) and Microbiology and Immunology. He has an institutional link with the Foundation for Education and Research in Health (FUNDEPS), playing the role of monitor and organizer of scientific events, as well as collaborator in health sciences research at the aforementioned institution. He is also an aspiring flower essence therapist, focusing on self-knowledge through flower essences. In addition, he also has technical and theoretical skills in business management as well as its aspects such as secretarial, personal marketing, personnel administration, and basic computer skills from Alternativa Escola de Profissões (2018).
