Abstract

Introduction: Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a type of chronic, autoimmune arthritis that primarily involves the spinal and sacroiliac joints. In more severe cases, this pathology can lead to a condition that results in loss of flexibility and fusion of the spine. Objective: To recognize viable and effective non-pharmacological treatment methods for the disease in question, given the great importance of the association with pharmacological treatment. Methodology: This is a descriptive research of the integrative literature review type, which sought to research the non-drug treatment of Spondylitis. The research was conducted through online access in the National Library of Medicine (PubMed MEDLINE), Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), Google Scholar, Virtual Health Library (VHL) and EBSCO Information Services databases, in the months of September and October 2022. Results and discussion: Physical activities, whether aquatic or terrestrial, are of great value when related to non-drug treatment of diseases that course with bone and muscle pain, by delaying the progression of the pathology and improving the patient's quality of life. In addition, home exercises indicated by physical therapists can also help with the aforementioned benefits. Furthermore, it is important to associate this with drug or even surgical treatment, especially in cases that are already advanced. Conclusion: The least invasive forms of treatment for ankylosing spondylitis are those that refer to physical activity that, associated with early diagnosis and pharmacological treatment, contribute to therapeutic success, lower risk of sequelae and, therefore, to a better quality of life for the patient.
