Attributions of the clinical pharmacist in the care of the elderly person: a bibliographic review

The growth in life expectancy has caused a large increase in the elderly population in Brazil and in the world. This longevity has resulted in many health problems, which have contributed to the irrational use of medicines, which can bring considerable problems to the health of the elderly. Therefore, it is necessary not only the dispensing of the drug, but the pharmaceutical clinical care as a whole. Where the pharmacist should be included as the professional who best understands the medicine, promoting the rational use of medicines and guiding the elderly patient. This study aims to describe the importance of the role of the clinical pharmacist in the health care of the elderly. To carry out this bibliographic review study, articles corresponding to the last 09 years in the period from 2013 to 2021 were searched, using the databases: PubMed, SciELO, LILACS and Google academic. Searches were carried out through the Health Sciences Descriptors and the Virtual Health Library. Of the articles surveyed, 11 were selected to compose this study, they showed significant results on the main diseases, drugs and drug interactions that can interfere in the care of the elderly. It is concluded that the pharmaceutical professional contributes a lot in the clinical intervention, pharmacotherapeutic and prescription of the elderly patient, for knowing all the aspects and characteristics of the medicines, it provides the correct use of the medicines, avoiding possible occurrences and drug interactions, being indispensable its presence in establishments of health, contributing to the improvement of the quality of life of the elderly.
