Introduction: Depression is classified as a mood disorder, being defined by depressed mood, associated wirh lack of interest, anhedonia, psychomotor slowness and other physical symptoms. Studies reveal that the prevalence of depression is higher in medical students when compared to the general population. This study aims to identify the risk factors most associated with depression among medical students. Methodology: A systematic review was carried out based on 4,436 articles selected from 03 electronic databases (SciELO, LILACS, and PubMed) using the descriptors “depression”, “medical students”, “students Health”. Results: 20 articles were selected after a detailed analysis of the topic, which were read in full text, and participated in the analysis proposed in this study. Conclusion: Among the risk factors most related to a higher prevalence of depression among medical students are: Being female, excessive study hours and poor sleep quality, in addition to substance use, being of non-white ethnicity and having non-heterosexual sexual orientation. Some protective factors were also evidenced, such as greater religiosity and family support.
