Hepatitis B in Medical Practice - Seroconversion status of medical students through enzyme immunoassays and its influential factors.

To determine, in medical students, knowledge; attitudes towards the social representation of hepatitis B; and immunological profile through enzyme immunoassays. This is an epidemiological, exploratory study conducted with medical students from a private higher education institution. For data collection, a self-administered instrument was applied; verification of the immunization card; and proof of the students' serological status. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Science software, using bivariate analysis and logistic regression. A total of 84 students participated in the study, most of them from the second academic year of the medical course (59.5%). Some gaps in students' knowledge about the transmissibility of the disease were noticed, showing a statistically significant association between immunization status and etiologic agent (p<0.020). It was found that 40.5% of the students were not immunized against HBV, incorrectly answering about the way to prevent the disease (66.7%) and that 91.7% had not certified their immunization status before the study. It was noted that students who always practice physical activities were 5,113 more likely to be immunized against HBV than those who “Never Practice”. In addition, it was noticed that students who would not accept assistance from a professional contaminated with HBV have a greater chance of not being immunized (OR=5.180 95% CI 1.112-24.139). It is concluded that part of the medical students were vulnerable to contamination by HBV, and in general, gaps in knowledge, attitudes towards the social representation of the disease are influential factors in the immunization status.
