Evaluation of toothbrushes higiene and storage by dental students

Abstract

Dental biofilm is controlled and removed through the use of toothbrushes, which aim to promote teeth cleaning and ensure good oral health. However, after use and depending on how it is stored, contamination may occur in its bristles and become a source of disease transmission. Thus, the objective of this work was to carry out a study on the conditions of storage and hygiene of the toothbrushes of the Dentistry students of the University Center of Viçosa, as well as the microorganisms present in them. Participating students donated their toothbrushes and filled out a form, toothbrushes were subsequently subjected to microbiological analysis. Then, the microbiological results were compared with the students' responses and the relationship between the conditions of use and the storage location with the microorganisms present in the bristles of the brushes was proven. Thus, it was observed that the students' toothbrushes were contaminated by different types of bacteria. The correct storage and disinfection of toothbrushes after use are measures that help to promote oral and systemic health, as they influence the presence of microorganisms present in them, knowledge that must be disseminated in the faculties of Dentistry.

She was tutor of the subject Dental Materials I in the first semester of 2022, conducted two researches of Scientific Initiation and received the award for best paper in poster format in XIV SIMPAC of Academic Research in 2022.

Ana Cristina da Rocha Duque, Centro Universitário de Viçosa

Substitute Professor of the Dentistry Course at UFMG, Disciplines of Dentistry I, Dental Materials I and Fundamentals of Restorative Dentistry She has also taught the disciplines of Oral Histology and Embryology, General Pathology, Stomatology, Semiology. PhD in Health Sciences: Area of ​​Concentration: Human Pathology from the Federal University of Triângulo Mineiro (2017). Master in Clinical Dentistry from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (2011). Specialist in Dental Prosthesis by ABO/JF (2010). Graduated in Dentistry from the Federal University of Juiz de Fora (2007).

Magna Coroa Lima , Centro Universitário de Viçosa

He has a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the Federal University of Bahia (2010), Master in Animal Science in the concentration area: Nutrition and Production of Ruminants, by the Federal University of Viçosa (2013) and PhD in Veterinary Medicine in the concentration area: Biotechnology, Diagnosis and Control of Diseases in Animals, by the Federal University of Viçosa - UFV(2018). Since 2016 he is a lecturer at the University Center of Viçosa (UNIVIÇOSA) teaching the subject of Production and Diseases of Goats and Sheep, Microbiology. He has experience in the area of Goat and Sheep farming, Goat nutrition, health management of small ruminants, with emphasis on preventive veterinary medicine, working mainly on the following topics: Microbiology, microbiological diagnosis, molecular techniques, antimicrobial resistance, bacterial diseases, goat and sheep diseases.

Bárbara Taíny Barbosa Niquini, Centro Universitário de Viçosa

Master's Degree in Dental Clinics with emphasis on Dental Radiology and Imaging, Specialist in Forensic Dentistry and Bachelor of Dentistry from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais. Post-graduated in Post-traumatic Body Damage Assessment (University of Coimbra - PT). Improvement in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology (IES-BH). Professor of Dentistry at the University Center of Viçosa - UNIVIÇOSA.
