The meninges are membranous structures that have the main function of lining the brain and spinal cord. They are divided into three structures (dura mater, arachnoid, and pia mater). Meningitis is a syndrome characterized by inflammation of the meninges, due to an infectious process or even chemical/inflammatory origins, which can lead to mild to severe neurological conditions or even death. The etiological agents can be diverse, such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, parasites, and even some drugs. The objective was to evaluate the evolution of meningitis cases in children under 1 year of age over a period of 10 years and assess the cases of meningitis caused by the two main bacterial etiologies between 2012 and 2022, using the database of the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS) as a research tool. At the end of the study, 15,204 cases were evaluated, with a mortality rate of 13% from meningitis and its complications, and the cure rate during this period was around 85-86%. It was also found that the mortality rate related to meningitis and its complications in the state of Paraná in the last 10 years is less than 15%. A significant reduction in meningitis cases was observed during the COVID-19 pandemic years. Furthermore, there were (or were reported) more cases of pneumococcal meningitis than meningococcal meningitis during this period in the state of Paraná.
