Abstract

Religiosity/Spirituality (R/S) have become the object of interest by many health researchers, allowing care to become more compassionate and suitable to the patient’s integrality. The aims of this study were to analyze and describe the influence of R/S on the therapy and prognosis of patients with mental disorders. This is an integrative literature review based on the following databases: PubMed, BIREME, SciELO, Cochrane Library and Portal de Periódicos CAPES. Controlled descriptors combined with boolean operators were used: “mental disorders” AND “spirituality” AND “prognosis”; and, in the last databases: “spirituality” AND “mental disorders prognosis”. The data collection took place in April 2020. 753 articles were recovered 69 studies were included that filled on the inclusion criterias and describes the influence of R/S on the therapy and prognosis of Dementia, Affective/Mood Disorders, Personality Disorders, Schizophrenia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Alcohol and other drugs disorders, and mental health in general. The articles evidenced a decrease in hospitalization and in patient’s symptoms, in addition to an increase in treatment adherence, improvement in quality of life, lower rates of alcohol abuse and development of gratitude, optimism, purpose and generosity. Studies converge on spirituality as a protective factor in several psychiatric diseases, also acting as an ally to treatment and improving prognosis. Furthermore, there is also a cost reduction in hospitalizations, which are proven to be shorter when spirituality is considered in the care process.
