Abstract

Cosmetic dentistry has aroused the interest of patients who wish to achieve a harmonic smile. One of the techniques to achieve dental aesthetics is the tooth whitening procedure that can be associated with the use of light sources to enhance whitening. The aim of the present study is to review in the literature the scientific evidence of the effect of the use of light sources on tooth whitening. In an attempt to simplify the technique, shorten the operative time and accelerate the results of tooth whitening, some professionals started to use activating light sources. Regarding the dental sensitivity and the microhardness of the substrate, it was observed in the literature that the two techniques contributed to the increase in postoperative sensitivity and enamel surface roughness. Scientific evidence points out that the use of light in the whitening process causes reversible and irreversible processes to the dental element, being also observed to a lesser extent during the conventional technique. In this way, the accelerating benefit of the light source in tooth whitening does not overcome the adverse factors related to its use.
