Evaluación de la actividad antibacteriana de Punica granatum Linn. (Granada) contra las bacterias orales: Una revisión integradora

Resumen

Se sabe que existe un gran potencial de plantas medicinales con actividad antibacteriana, convirtiéndose en alternativa para el combate a las infecciones. Entre las plantas medicinales, Punica granatum Linn.  (Granada), que tiene compuestos bioactivos utilizados para el tratamiento de enfermedades y se utiliza como antiséptico oral para tratar el dolor de garganta. Por lo tanto, el estudio tenía como objetivo evaluar la actividad antibacteriana de Punica granatum L. contra las bacterias orales. Para ello, se realizó una revisión integradora, con búsqueda de artículos en las bases de datos PubMed, LILACS y SciELO, utilizando los términos "punica granatum", "pomegranate"', "dentistry", "mouth" y "oral". Los artículos fueron seleccionados de acuerdo con los siguientes criterios de inclusión: artículos originales disponibles en su totalidad, publicados en inglés, español o portugués y publicados en los últimos 10 años (2010 a 2020). La búsqueda dio como resultado 126 artículos y, tras leer el título y el resumen, 16 artículos cumplían los objetivos de la investigación y se incluyeron en la revisión. Los resultados muestran que existen efectos antibacterianos principalmente a partir de estudios in vitro (n=13; 81,25%), con acción, en la mayoría de los estudios de la revisión, sobre Streptococcus mutans y otras especies de Streptococcus orales. A través de los análisis, se encuentra que las diferentes formas de uso del material vegetal tienen actividad antibacteriana in vivo e in vitro, especialmente el extracto de corteza. Por lo tanto, el uso de la granada tiene potencial antibacteriano y puede ser una alternativa para la prevención y la terapia de las infecciones orales.
