Del diagnóstico a la curación: El papel del Odontólogo en el tratamiento del câncer bucal

Resumen

El carcinoma escamocelular (CEC) es una neoplasia maligna de origen epitelial que puede afectar a todo el aparato digestivo superior y las vías respiratorias, desde la cavidad bucal hasta el final de la región orofaríngea. El odontólogo juega un papel primordial en la prevención del cáncer bucal, especialmente cuando actúa en los niveles de prevención primaria y secundaria, proponiendo acciones que faciliten el reconocimiento de las personas pertenecientes al grupo de riesgo y realizando prácticas que buscan diagnosticar las lesiones en estadio precoz. Objetivo: reportar un caso de CEC, destacando el papel del odontólogo en el diagnóstico precoz de la lesión y durante el tratamiento del cáncer. Caso clínico: Paciente de sexo femenino, melanoderma, 64 años, que acudió al ambulatorio de la Clínica Odontologica de la Facultad de Odontología de la Universidad Federal de Ceará Campus Sobral, con el principal síntoma de malestar de la prótesis. El examen clínico intraoral reveló una lesión nodular, de color eritroleucoplásica, de consistencia fibrosa, localizada en el paladar blando, de unos 3 cm de diámetro. Consideraciones finales: el diagnóstico precoz del cáncer bucal puede orientar un adecuado manejo terapéutico y, en consecuencia, promover un pronóstico favorable.
