Vitamina D en pacientes con COVID-19: perspectivas actuales

Resumen

La búsqueda de recursos terapéuticos adyacentes a la vacuna capaces de prevenir o tratar COVID-19 sugiere a la vitamina D como un posible aliado. Se sabe que la vitamina D desempeña varias funciones esqueléticas adicionales en el cuerpo, entre las que se destaca en el sistema inmunológico. Esta revisión narrativa tiene como objetivo enunciar las atribuciones y perspectivas actuales para el uso de vitamina D en pacientes diagnosticados con COVID-19. La búsqueda se realizó en la base de datos Medline (PubMed), entre mayo y julio de 2021, sobre los roles fisiológicos e inmunológicos de la vitamina D en las infecciones respiratorias, así como sus mecanismos de acción, en relación con COVID-19. Los resultados sugieren una posible asociación entre las concentraciones séricas de 25 (OH) D y el cuadro clínico de COVID-19 (es decir, mortalidad, inflamación, gravedad de la enfermedad, necesidad de ventilación mecánica o ingreso en la UCI), aunque estos estudios difieren en cuanto al diseño, tamaño de la muestra y resultados evaluados, lo que hace imposible establecer un análisis comparativo más preciso. Por tanto, se necesitan más estudios, con un diseño claro y objetivo sobre el papel de la vitamina D en la prevención o el tratamiento del COVID-19.
