Abstract

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of selenium (Se) supplementation on oxidative stress in rat ovaries. For this purpose, 36 rats were divided into 3 groups (control group, group 1 - 48 μg of Se, and group 2 - 96 μg of Se), which underwent daily gavage with chelated selenium for 6 weeks, and then underwent total hysterectomy and subsequent total TIOL and TBARS dosage of the ovaries using spectrophotometry. As results, there was a statistically significant drop in TBARS levels between group 1 (3.07±3.19 nM) and group 2 (0.54±0.80 nM) (p=0.01). Regarding TIOL, there was no significant difference between the control group (51.05 ± 35.02 μg SH-NP. g tissue-1), group 1 (61.15 ± 33.47 μg SH-NP. g tissue-1) and group 2 (62.9 ± 18.04 μg SH-NP. g tissue-1) (p=0.883).  It was concluded that selenium supplementation significantly reduced TBARS concentration in the ovary of rats and there was no statistically significant difference in ovarian TIOL levels between the groups. Therefore, selenium had an effect on some markers of oxidative stress.
