Enfermedad periodontal en pacientes con respiración bucal: Revisión de la literatura

La enfermedad periodontal involucra procesos patológicos que afectan al periodonto. La parafunción de respiración bucal, conduce a cambios en los patrones de flujo salival y al desequilibrio hídrico, lo que resulta en afecciones bucodentales. El objetivo de este estudio fue, mediante una revisión bibliográfica, analizar los resultados de varias investigaciones que hayan establecido una relación entre la enfermedad periodontal y la respiración bucal. Metodología: se realizó una búsqueda y selección de artículos relacionados con la enfermedad periodontal en pacientes con respiración bucal. Los criterios de búsqueda tomados en cuenta fueron: bases de datos electrónicos, palabras clave y cumplir con el requisito indispensable de tener una antigüedad menor a 5 años de su publicación. Se seleccionaron 33 artículos que cumplieron los criterios para la presente revisión. Resultados y conclusión: la enfermedad periodontal y la respiración bucal pueden estar asociadas con una inflamación sistémica generalizada. Cambios en el patrón de respiración nasal pueden alterar las estructuras anatómicas normales dando lugar al desarrollo de factores desencadenantes de enfermedad periodontal.
