The importance of liver monitoring in chronic renal: a literature review

Kidney diseases, whether acute or chronic, represent a major global public health challenge, which is no different in the Brazilian context. The main causes of kidney diseases are drug toxicity, Diabetes Mellitus and vascular alterations, such as Systemic Arterial Hypertension, symbolizes the progressive and irreversible loss of kidney functions. Pathologies in this organ lead to changes in various organs and systems. The liver, an important organ of the digestive system, has important functions that can be altered as a result of kidney disease and/or as a result of its treatment. This article aims to demonstrate the importance of liver monitoring in chronic renal patients; of how kidney dysfunction interferes with liver functions and the risks to which the liver is exposed during CKD treatment. Data were obtained by means of a bibliographic narrative review of articles related to the topic, in the following search engines: PubMed, Literature Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) and Google Scholar. During the search, 56 articles were found, of which 20 articles were selected for analysis, as they were within the inclusion criteria. The review showed that there is an important correlation between kidney and liver health, where CKD leads to morphological and functional changes in the kidneys as well as the liver. Therefore, during CKD treatment, it is recommended to evaluate liver health markers and other organs for better health maintenance, and further studies are recommended to evaluate the renal-hepatic relationship in patients with CKD.
