Abstract

Objective: Elucidate about risk factors, pathophysiology, complications, prevention and treatment of pressure ulcers. Methodology: A bibliographic survey was carried out in order to find out about pressure injuries. Results and Discussion: Pressure ulcers (PU) are preventable, but frequent in the sick. It represents the patient's prognosis and the quality of the health service offered. There are several risk factors for PU, such as advanced age, immobility, debilitation, hospitalization and surgical intervention. The main mechanisms for its formation are: shear force, pressure and friction. PUs can cause serious complications and even be fatal. Prevention consists of identifying susceptible patients at the time of admission and instituting prophylactic measures such as surface support, frequent repositioning, adequate nutrition and moisture management. The treatment of PU is based on education, patient optimization and correction of reversible causes. Conclusion: PUs represents a public health problem and have a high incidence, therefore, preventive measures should be invested, as they are not only more effective, but also have a lower cost when compared to treatment.
