Uso de pioglitazona en pacientes diabéticos con deterioro cognitivo relacionado con la enfermedad de Alzheimer

Introducción: Los estudios sugieren que el uso de pioglitazona en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 (DM2) se asoció a un riesgo significativamente menor de deterioro cognitivo. Así, este artículo pretende dilucidar el efecto de la pioglitazona sobre la cognición en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Materiales y métodos: Se trata de una revisión integradora, en la que la pregunta guía fue "¿Es capaz la pioglitazona de reducir la progresión de la demencia en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 2?". La búsqueda de artículos se realizó en PubMed a partir de los términos "pioglitazone", "dementia" y "alzheimer" combinados entre sí por operadores booleanos. Resultados y discusión: Es posible inferir que la pioglitazona está asociada a un menor riesgo de progresión de la demencia en pacientes con DM tipo 2 con diagnóstico reciente, teniendo efectos positivos también en individuos con enfermedad cardíaca y acidez vascular cerebral (AVC). Consideraciones finales: Por lo tanto, el uso de pioglitazona tiene beneficios en la reducción de la demencia dependiendo de las comorbilidades del individuo, y no se recomienda abiertamente para todo tipo de pacientes. Estudios futuros deberán analizar el mejor perfil de paciente para la administración de la droga, de modo que se alcance su máxima eficacia.
