Evidencia de apoyo nutricional en pacientes con diagnóstico COVID-19

En diciembre de 2019, Wuhan, capital de Hubei, provincia de China, enfrentó un brote similar a la neumonía, de causa desconocida, con presentaciones clínicas similares a una infección viral. En un mes, las muestras del tracto respiratorio inferior se sometieron a un análisis de secuenciación, caracterizando la condición como resultado del coronavirus, recibiendo el nombre de Coronavirus 2 del síndrome respiratorio agudo severo (SARS-CoV-2) o COVID-19, según lo designado por Organización Mundial de la Salud. Desde entonces, la enfermedad ha afectado a países de todo el mundo, que todavía están buscando un tratamiento eficaz para la enfermedad. Teniendo en cuenta que la integridad del sistema inmune es crucial para la recuperación y la mejora del pronóstico de los pacientes afectados por la infección, el suministro adecuado de nutrientes es esencial para su mantenimiento, además del hecho de que la insuficiencia del estado nutricional puede aumentar la predisposición a infecciones secundarias, complicaciones hospitalarias y tasas de morbilidad y mortalidad. Ante esto, el presente estudio corresponde a una revisión de la literatura, compilando la evidencia principal de que las vitaminas y minerales pueden actuar como potenciadores de los tratamientos propuestos y ayudar directa o indirectamente a la recuperación de pacientes con COVID-19.
