Abstract

Objective: This study’s aim is to perform a literature review to synthesize information about the use of sensors for training the muscles that stabilize the spine of patients who suffer from lombalgy or lumbar disc protrusion. We also aim to contribute to the current investigations on this subject. Methodology: We have extracted the data for this study from the Science Direct, MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, and Scielo databases. The words “sensors”, “muscular stabilizers”, “lombalgy” and “lumbar disc protrusion” were used as descriptors when searching through the titles and abstracts of publications in the English, Spanish and Portuguese languages. We have also combined these words for better results. We have selected articles that referred to studies that were published until the present year. Results: This study highlights the progress of technologies such as sensor and microelectronics, and data analysis methods that allow for the development and implementation of systems for remote patient monitoring. We also found that these technologies improve the collection of physiological and movement data, allowing for better monitoring of patients with conditions such as lumbar disc protrusion and lombalgy. This study also identifies commercially available sensors that capture movement to aid in postural and balance evaluation. Conclusion: Over the past few years, the progress obtained by the use of these sensors has been a driving force that led researchers to strive for improvements in the performance and practicality of this technology.
