Abstract

Introduction: Ready to eat vegetables are increasingly recognized as important vehicles for the transmission of human pathogens. The clinical importance of S. maltophilia, P. aeruginosa and Salmonella spp. has been recognized as being relevant pathogenic opportunistic mioorganisms. It is common knowledge that eating is the main way for bactéria to enter the human gastrointestinal tract, and bacteria with antibiotic resistant genes might transfer these genes to opportunistic pathogenic bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Objective: This work’s objective was to research the presence of S. maltophilia, P. aeruginosa e Salmonella spp. ready to eat vegetables marketed in Rio de Janeiro city, by the molecular method of polymerase chain reaction. Methodology: 30 samples of ready to eat vegetables of different types, were collected between March 2017 and March 2018. To detect the presence of bacteria in the samples, DNA were extracted and a polymerase chain reaction analyses made afterwards, complemented with visualization on agarose gel. Results and Discussion: In this study, in none of the 30 samples, the presence of the S. maltophilia, P. aeruginosa and Salmonella spp was detected. Conclusion: This result does not preclude the presence of these bacteria in ready to eat vegetables as they were detected in many other studies. Ready to eat vegetables have a great microbiota, with different types of bacteria, many of them antibiotic resistant, with a potential risk for consumers.
