Objectives: To identify the prevalence and incidence of chronic pain with and without neuropathic characteristics in cancer patients in public hospitals in São Luís, Maranhão. Methodology: This is a cross-sectional study. The sample was made up of patients diagnosed with cancer who were admitted to the clinics of two oncology hospitals in the public health network in the city of São Luís – MA. The prevalence and incidence of chronic pain in cancer patients was identified and then the sociodemographic and clinical profile was described and questionnaires validated in Portuguese were used to identify the presence of the neuropathic component in pain. Results: The final sample of this study was 1020 patients. The prevalence of chronic pain in cancer patients was 35.3%. Of these, 62.5% had neuropathic pain. Furthermore, the incidence was 21.4%. The individuals with NDRC were, for the most part, low-income women, with a lower educational level, Afro-descendants, from rural areas and diagnosed with breast cancer and cervical cancer, mainly. Conclusion: A large proportion of patients with diagnosed with cancer live with chronic pain, whether with or without a neuropathic component, affecting mainly low-income women with a lower level of education.
