The practice of breastfeeding among women working: an integrative review

Objective: To analyze the scientific evidence about the right to breastfeeding among women working. Methods: Integrative literature review guided by the question: What aspects are evidenced about the practice of breastfeeding among women working? Searches were conducted in the LILACS, PubMed® and MEDLINE® databases, and in the SciELO electronic library in May 2019, using the descriptors “Breast feeding”, “Women working”, “Workplace”, “Legislation, labor” combined using the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR”. Studies available in full in Portuguese, English and Spanish were included, excluding dissertations, theses, literature reviews and editorial notes. Results: The final sample resulted in 15 articles, most of the studies were carried out in different international settings and with level of evidence VI. The largest proportion of studies used a cross-sectional design. Factors such as maternal work, maternal education, low family income, maternal age, type of delivery, maternal decision (mother no longer wants to breastfeed), depression and parity were associated with early weaning. The lack of supportive work environments, lactation facilities and the period of paid maternity leave were all cited as barriers to breastfeeding in the workplace. Conclusion: Studies have shown the difficulty in maintaining breastfeeding after returning to work. Rights related to the promotion of breastfeeding that are not guaranteed in their entirety make it impossible to continue exclusive breastfeeding among women working. The extension of maternity leave from 120 to 180 days is identified as the main factor that reduces the weaning rate.
