Comparison of the classification of child development disorders using DSM-5, ICD-10 and ICD-11

A correct diagnosis is of fundamental importance for medicine and other health areas. This way, researchers and agencies around the world have sought to establish standardized diagnostic systems, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) and the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). However, ICD-11, which will be implemented in 2022, brings substantial changes in childhood mental disorders, including Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD), as mentioned in ICD-10, a fact that has raised several discussions as to its reasons and clinical implications. Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the main issues raised in the literature, by recalling the history of children's mental classifications and disorders, until reaching the classification of mental pathologies of this stage of development by using DSM and ICD. To fulfill this purpose, a narrative-type bibliographic review was chosen based on the search for articles referring to DSM, ICD, PDD and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) in the databases “PubMed”, “Scielo” and “Google Scholar”. As a result, both ICD and DSM seem to follow the evolution of studies together with regard to psychiatric nosology, although it is done in the midst of pros and cons. In this sense, it can be stated, therefore, that, even with their divergent principles, both seem to follow a neurobiological trend in the taxonomic systematization of mental disorders, leading to the adoption of dimensional approaches.
