Epidemiological profile of dengue in Brazil and its correlation with the precarious conditions of basic sanitation

Abstract

Introduction: Dengue is an infectious viral disease transmitted to man mainly by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito in four serotypes. The disorderly growth of cities, added to the precarious conditions of basic sanitation in Brazil, increased the breeding grounds for the transmitting mosquito. Thus, epidemiological incidence data are synthetic measures that contain the health status of a population and which, in this study, was related to health conditions. Objective: To identify the epidemiological profile of dengue and relate it to the precarious conditions of basic sanitation in Brazilian regions. Methodology: This is an epidemiological, descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional study. A survey was carried out in the databases of the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) - DATASUS, and the Primary Care Information System (SIAB) referring to the Brazilian regions. The data available in DATASUS for sanitation conditions are in accordance with the last Census, in 2010. For the construction of tables, the incidence calculation was used. Results: The results showed that the Brazilian Midwest has the highest incidence of dengue, surpassing the number of infected people to those at risk of contamination, being the most favorable region for the development and multiplication of the vector. Discussion: Dialoguing with other authors, we contacted results that corroborate this research, highlighting the importance of basic sanitation for the control and eradication of infectious diseases. Conclusion: The analysis of the results allowed us to establish the relationship between the sanitation-dengue binomial. Therefore, improvements in basic sanitation can reduce the incidence of dengue and, therefore, public expenditures for the treatment of this disease.
