Culture of patient safety in an accredited high complexity hospital

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to present the results of the research on patient safety from the perceptions of the employees of high complex hospital, located in the southern region of Brazil. It is applied, transversal, exploratory and descriptive research, with survey design and quantitative approach. Data collection was performed using the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC), developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research And Quality and validated in Brazil by Reis (2013). 646 (67%) of the 960 hospital employees participated in the survey. The main results of the study were identified as strong dimensions for patient safety 'organizational learning', 'hospital management support for patient safety', 'frequency of reported events' and' expectations about your supervisor / boss' and 'actions promoting patient safety. Otherwise, the dimensions ‘shift change / shift’ and ‘non-punitive responses to errors’ were characterized as fragile for the safety culture in the hospital. Therefore, reinforcing the promoter aspects and intervening in the weakening aspects represent urgent and necessary actions to be taken in the hospital in question, as well as in the entire hospital system.

Magda Macedo Madalozzo, University of Caxias do Sul

PhD in Organizational and Work Psychology from the Federal University of Santa Catarina, Master in Business Administration from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Lato Sensu Post-Graduation in Organizational Psychology from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul, Graduation in Psychology from the University of Caxias do Sul (CRP-07/02626) and Graduation in Business Administration from the University of Caxias do Sul. He is currently a professor at the University of Caxias do Sul (RS) in undergraduate and graduate courses Lato Sensu and Strictu Sensu. Professor of the Graduate Program in Psychology - Professional Master's Degree / UCS. Organizational consultant.

João Ignacio Pires Lucas, University of Caxias do Sul

João Ignacio Pires Lucas has a degree in Social Sciences (BA, UFRGS, 1993), Specialist in Management and University Leadership (UNIVAP, 2008), Master (1996) and Doctor in Political Science (2003) by UFRGS. He is currently a professor in the humanities area at the University of Caxias do Sul and in the Graduate Program in Psychology / Professional Master's at UCS. He was advisor to the Pro-Rectories of Institutional Planning and Development and Graduate Studies in Research (2002-2006 period), deputy head of the Sociology Department (mandate 2003-2005), head of the Sociology Department (mandate 2005-2006) and Dean of Planning and Institutional Development at UCS (2006-2009 period). As a researcher, he has had an interdisciplinary approach, investigating and publishing on the social and psychosocial risks of the world of work and institutions. He is a member of the Institute of Economic and Social Research of UCS-IPES-and of the Nuclei of Studies in Law and in Public and Social Policies.

Lilia Aparecida Kanan, University of Planalto Catarinense

Graduated in Psychology from Universidade Tuiuti do Paraná (1983), Master in Administration from Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (2000), PhD in Psychology from Universidade Federal de SC (2008), under the supervision of Prof. Dr. José Carlos Zanelli and Post-Doctorate also under the supervision of Prof. Dr. José Carlos Zanelli. She is a psychologist, professor of Undergraduate, Lato Sensu Specialization, MBA and the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program Master in Environment and Health at UNIPLAC (SC). She has experience in Psychology, with an emphasis on Occupational Health and Organizational and Work Psychology. He works mainly on the following themes: well-being at work, psychosocial risks, healthy organizations, bonds in organizations, human behavior in organizations, work psychology, worker health, Quality of Life at Work (QWL), training in PO&T, among others . She was the coordinator of the Stricto Sensu Postgraduate Program in Environment and Health at UNIPLAC (SC) and the Dean of Research, Extension and Graduate Studies at UNIPLAC (SC). Teacher invoked in the mastery of Psychology of the Health of the Cooperative University of Colombia.

Silvana Regina Ampessan Marcon, Universidade de Caxias do Sul

He holds a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Caxias do Sul (1987), a Master's in Administration from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1998) and a doctorate in Psychology (Line Organizations, work and learning) from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (2008). She currently owns - Human Resources Decision and Full Professor at the University of Caxias do Sul. She has experience in the field of Administration, with an emphasis on Human Resources, working mainly on the following topics: strategic planning, psychology, organizational psychology, worker health, administration in human resources and management. She was Head of the UCS Department of Psychology from January 2003 to July 2007. She was Director of the UCS Humanities Center from August 2007 to July 2014. Professor in undergraduate and specialization courses. She performed activities in the Institutional Evaluation Sector linked to UCS Planning and Budget Advisory from 2014 to 2020. She performs activities at the UCS Center for Innovation and Educational Technologies, in the University Management nucleus. Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Psychology at UCS - Professional Master's Degree, starting in July 2019. Member of the National Association of Research and Graduate Studies in Psychology

Aline Santos de Souza, Universidade de Caxias do Sul

Graduated in Nursing from the University of Caxias do Sul (2010), Specialization in Health Services Management (2011), Specialization in People Management (2015) and Specialization in Quality in Health and Patient Safety (2020). He holds a Master's Degree in Public Health from the Lutheran University of Brazil-ULBRA (2015). She is currently Coordinator of Human Resources, SESMT and Clinical Psychology. Leading evaluator at the Brazilian Institute for Excellence in Health - IBES, ONA Methodology (National Accreditation Organization). Tutor of the course ImmunizaSUS - CONASEMS. She has experience in people management, health service management, occupational health, still in nursing with an emphasis on coordination of the operating room, quality in health and patient safety, distance tutoring, teaching and Hospital Accreditation.
